The Bazaar And The Cathedral snapshots
Stefaan Quix [1967] is a bassplayer & composer living and working in Brussels. Permanently active in three or four musical projects: bassplayer in mutant rock bands, improviser in Zornian apres-music formations or meticulous analyst of Glenn Gould's interpretations of "Die Goldberg Variationen". This latter project is called "The Bazaar and the Cathedral" and has become his main vector of individual expression. His compositional strategies are based on repetition, the use of micro-intervals and diverse cut and paste techniques. A new release in this series is expected in 2008.

ping-pong are a no-input mixing desk and electronics duo from Brussels. On their debut recording manifold influences such as Deleuze's reading of Leibniz in "Le Pli", slash fiction sci-fi, Donna Hathaway's "Cyborg Manifesto" coalesce in an uncompromising electronic adventure. This could be the soundtrack to Star Trek if Spock were replaced by Michel Foucault, Captain Kirk by Antonio Negri, McCoy by Félix Guattari and the Starfleet logo by a red star. [more]

The Bazaar And The Cathedral 1.5 "... a decelerated image of a colourful horizon, untainted but for a passing ship, is related to a minimalist sound piece. Precisely calibrated tones are slowly pacing ahead, almost imperceptibly changing in frequency, pitch and colour. Sounds overflow, creating new accents and minimal shifts in tone. Music and image are constantly evolving but they give an impression of constituting an ageless continuum. This is beauty in its most simple form..." [more]

The Bazaar And The Cathedral 1.4 This issue reflects Quix's interest in minimal music and instruction art. It is a long meditation based on the first two notes of The Goldberg Variations. The composition is divided in three parts, each one based on a set of instructions defining microchanges in pitch, delay, decay and frequency. [more]

The Bazaar And The Cathedral 1.2 This recording documents Quix's then obsession with the BOSS PS-2 Pitch Shifter / Delay and Glenn Gould's first recording of The Goldberg Variations. Recorded during 6 months about 10 hours of tape were then edited down to these 5 short tracks. [more]
